According to Strategic Advisor at UN Global Compact (UNGCN) Dr. Hasan Youness, roughly 80% of them occur on the web and only 20% in the physical world. Thus, he remarks that awareness and obedience regarding internet norms of behavior now claim more importance than ever. This code of conduct, consisting of 9 rules, as the blogger points out, is known as netiquette, and stems from traditional conventions and common sense, adapted to the nature of the internet landscape and dynamics.

The introductory video of this lesson (the topic will be expanded on later) emphasizes two of these norms. Firstly, you should remember that you are dealing with human beings, and thus should not say to others on the web that which you would not dare tell them face to face. Secondly,  keep in mind that what you write on the internet might remain there for an incalculable long time, and it may come back to haunt you in the future, perhaps years later.

In short, the advisor highlights that online interactions lack the facial communication, gestures, voice modulations, etc., that take place in-person, so you must exert the utmost caution and be extremely specific. In case of doubt, as he recommends, the smartest thing is to follow the golden rule: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.
